Tilt or buttons? A short, opinionated answer

Tilt or buttons? A short, opinionated answer

April 13, 2026 · Markus Feldmann

Every mobile racer ships with tilt controls on by default, and I am convinced most players never turn them off. That is a mistake for anything with tight corners.

Tilt feels immersive for about ten minutes, then your wrists start negotiating with physics. For drift-heavy games like Neon Drift Circuit, on-screen buttons gave me far more consistent lines. You can hold a precise angle instead of guessing how far to lean.

Where tilt does win is in gentle, open racers with wide tracks. There the loose feel matches the game, and buttons can feel twitchy by comparison.

My rule: if the game has drifting or sharp hairpins, switch to buttons and give it three races before judging. Your first race will feel worse. Your fifth will feel like cheating.
